Working with Martindale Press

Find out all you need to know about the design, print and finishing process

We can take care of your letterpress stationery needs, right from design to finishing. We have a passion for vintage and rustic design, elegant typography, and we even offer hand-illustrated artworks to create a letterpress product that is uniquely yours.

floral illustrationWe design for anything from Wedding invitation suites and special occasion cards, to logos for business stationery, business cards and swing tags.

We will start by asking for a design brief, which can include descriptions and images, or anything else that has inspired your ideas, so that we have a good understanding of exactly what it is you have in mind. The more detail the better!!

From here we will ask for a deposit before providing you with a few concept ideas, which we will email you in PDF format. This will give us our starting point. Feel free to request as many changes as you like, make suggestions and help point us in the right direction. We won’t be happy until you love your design, however keep in mind, we will only allow for three lots of alterations, so when viewing your proofs, please ask for as many changes as you can think of from the start.

Existing design

See something you like in our gallery, or perhaps something you would like if it had a few changes? Not a problem. All of the products in our gallery can be chosen as is, or can be changed to suit your needs. If you choose an existing design, we can alter colours, fonts and some formatting to suit your needs at no extra charge.

Supplied artwork

If you already have your artwork done, and would like us to print it for you, just send it through in a high-resolution file, preferably PDF format, with crop marks. Need help with file preparation? Contact us here to learn more.

Our Paper

Paper that leaves a good impression (yes, pun intended)

We can’t take all the credit for the fine work we produce, as the paper we use can make or break a letterpress print. We are suckers for fine papers, and source the best from across the world to guarantee a deep, crisp print.

Crane Lettra

Crane and Co., dating back to the American Revolution, have been producing fine 100% cotton papers for 200 years, with customers like Paul Revere, the Roosevelt’s, and even the Queen Mum; so if it’s good for ol’ Liz, we’re pretty excited to use it too. But its not just the history of this paper that has us sold; it’s beautifully soft yet strong, with a luxurious texture, and just all round lovely.

This paper comes in 300 and 600gsm weights in white or ivory. And if you’re environmentally conscious, the paper is made from 100% recycled cotton fibres.

Our option for the budget conscious is the Wild 450gsm, available in ivory. This paper is very thick and textured, making it perfect for rustic inspired stationary. It contains 35% cotton fibres and is FSC certified.

…So what’s the difference?

What’s the difference between 300 and 600gsm I hear you ask? To put it simply: the thickness. 300gsm is beautiful and soft, however because it is not as thick, the impression can show through to the back of the paper when pressed (we do love to use maximum impression to make the most of the letterpress process) making it unsuitable for double sided printing. 600gsm is super thick, allowing for beautifully deep impression, without showing on the back of the sheet. The wild 450gsm stock is also very thick, and is well suited to double sided printing.

Custom paper

We are by no means limited to these options alone however. If you are looking for something specific for your special project, or you want something a little different, but are unsure exactly what that is, we will be happy to search high and low until we find paper that is perfect for you.

Please do keep in mind though, if we source paper that we do not hold in stock, the price may be a little extra as we will not be buying it in bulk.

If you would like to see and feel the paper before you decide, we will be happy to post you some samples.
